Besides hiking, you can go mountain-biking, horseback riding, play golf, fishing and much more…
Also for motor-riding it is a perfect place.
The (volcanic-) lakes in the vicinity of Olloix, like for example Lac Aydat and Lac Chambon, are excellent for water sports activities. You can go swimming, canoeing, and surfing. |
At a short 30-minute drive from La Grange aux Ayres you will find the charming ski resorts of Mont Dore and Super Besse, where you can ski on a volcano. Around these ski resorts you will also find over 120 km cross-country skiing tracks for all levels.
Not a skiing fan? There are several other activities to undertake during the winter months, such as hiking on so-called “raquettes” (special show shoes) and making a tour with a dog-sledge.

Cultural
Besides sports activities, the Auvergne also offers a wide range of cultural activities.
You can visit for example the ruins of medieval castles, spiritual monasteries or beautifully renovated roman churches.

Clermont-Ferrand, in the heart of the volcanic region, is the capital of the Auvergne, and only half an hour’s drive from Olloix. With its distinctive black buildings made from volcanic rock, and its lively city center, Clermont is definitely worth a visit.
It offers several museums, a magnificent cathedral and basilica, a theatre, and of course a wide variety of restaurants and shops.
The tourist office offers four urban walks through the old parts of Clermont-Ferrand which allow you to know more about the history of the town.

Action / Adventure
Looking for some more action and adventure?
The Puy-de-Dôme offers numerous exciting activities such as paragliding, rock-climbing, flying over the volcanoes in a hot-air balloon, down-hill mountain-biking and many more.
Furthermore, the sports- parks in St. Nectaire and Royat offer different outdoor sports activities and you can go luge-riding in the summer in Super Besse.

Relaxing
Looking for some relaxation after a long day of activities or just in need of some revitalization? Towns such as La Bourboule, Le Mont Dore and St. Nectaire have been some of France’s most popular health resorts for decades and still offer several different thermal baths and spa’s, where you can opt for a simple but relaxing visit to the sauna or for a full-day (or multiple-day) package including all sorts of massages and beauty treatments.

Culinary
The Auvergne offers a vast selection of culinary specialties and delicious regional dishes, prepared with simple but high-quality regional products. At one of the numerous weekly markets you can stroll along the different market stalls and sample the regional produce.
Do you like cheese? The special “Routes des fromages A.O.C d’Auvergne” introduces you to all of the famous and delicious cheeses that are produced in the region, such as the St. Nectaire, the Cantal cheese and the Bleu d’Auvergne.
Naturally, in La Grange aux Ayres we will serve typical ‘Auvergnat’ dishes prepared with fresh regional products.
